Introducing the Mirror Dinghy
The Mirror dinghy is not just a great dinghy, She’s an amazing teacher too. She’s also cheap to fix and tweak and an exceptional ambassador for sailing. The perfect starter boat!
I’ve lost count of all the wonderful converstaiuons i’ve had with passing strangers whom with I have reminisced fondly about their first boat… A Mirror too! The Mirror dinghy isn’t just a dinghy, it’s sailing folklore and you;r enever that far away form one when on the water!
My Mirror, “Mochyn Du” is more than all the above as she has also become a great friend to me, betraying the fact she’s just wood, rope and metal!
Read on to learn about mine and also where to find all kinds of help and advice on the Mirror dinghy in general.
Why I chose a Mirror Dinghy
After reseraching a lot before buying Mochyn Du, I decided upon the Mirror. It just ticked all the right boxes for me and then Mochyn Du just dropped into my lap! Here’s why I chose the Mirror, or did she choose me I wonder?
A great teacher
The Mirror Dinghy has everything you need to learn to sail including a multiple sail rig with mainsail, jib and spinnaker and a centre board.
She’s also very well behaved. Yes she’s a proper dinghy so expect to be popped over the side now and again if you push her, but she’s easy to handle, easy to right and a great boat to learn in.
Easy to handle
At only 50KG’s she’s very light to handle and get in and out of the water single handed. Being only 10.5 feet in length also makes her easy to tow, store and lift if needed.
I’ve picked her up with the help of just 1 other person and some even roof rack theirs!
Very Inexpensive
They are cheap to buy, cheap to fix, cheap to upgrade or tweak . The Mirror was designed to be cheap and mass produced so you don’t need many £££’s to get sailing with one.
There’s also plenty of them around and if you need to do a bit of renovation, then its usually quick, easy and inexpensive to do.
Becoming part of the Family
Wherever you sail, you’ll bump into a Mirror or previous Mirror owners and you really do feel like you’re in a very special family. It also means plenty of people to ask for advice and plenty of sailing anecdotes to hear!
There’s also a very healthy, alive and kicking Mirror dinghy community to ask for help and parts are abundant.
